Wizard's Bane

Ancient Rolara's Answer to Unchecked Magic

The legendary sword, Wizard's Bane, is deeply intertwined with the history and lore of Aermond, a bustling settlement in the kingdom of Rolara. This artifact, requiring attunement by an Elf or fey creature, is an Elven shortsword crafted from a mysterious black metal. It's not just a weapon, but a symbol of power and protection, a testament to the kingdom's rich history and vibrant culture.   The sword is known for its unique ability to consume magic within a close radius, a trait referred to as 'Mythic Hunger.' This ability not only provides a bonus to attack and damage rolls but also allows the wielder to counteract spells or magical effects that target any creature or object within that radius. This power increases each time the sword consumes a spell, resetting each day at dawn.   However, the sword's power is not without its drawbacks. The attunement to Wizard's Bane is a binding commitment, and the wielder cannot willingly unattune to it. Moreover, the sword's magic-consuming nature extends to the wielder, making them immune to spells of 6th level or lower, including beneficial spells cast by allies. Even the wielder's own magic is at risk, requiring a significant effort to cast spells without them being consumed by the sword.   The sword's connection to the Feywild is also notable. If left in the Feywild for a month, it creates an anti-magic field around it, which expands daily until it covers a 13-mile radius. This field persists until the sword attunes to a new user.   The Aermond Royal Family, who has ruled for five generations, is rumored to owe their continued existence to an unseen guardian, an assassin in the shadows who is always watching, always protecting. Some whispers suggest that this guardian wields the Wizard's Bane, using its power to safeguard the kingdom and its rulers.   In the hands of a proficient wielder, Wizard's Bane is more than a weapon—it's a tool of protection, a symbol of power, and a testament to the rich history and vibrant culture of Aermond.

Mechanics & Inner Workings

Wizard's Bane

Weapon (shortsword), artifact (requires attunement by a half-elf, elf, or fey creature)   The sword Wizard's Bane is an Elven shortsword made of a mysterious black metal. You have a +1 bonus to attack and damage rolls made with this magic weapon.
Mythic Hunger. Wizard's Bane can be used to eat almost any magic that enters a 5 foot radius around its wielder. Spells or magical effects that target any creature or object within that radius allows you to use your reaction to expend a number of charges and cast counterspell. When a spell is eaten by the sword, it's magical bonus increases +1 (to a maximum of +3). This magical bonus resets each day at dawn.
Charges. Wizard's Bane has 7 charges. When it's Mythic Hunger trait is used, you can choose to expend a number of charges to cast the spell counterspell. One charge allows you to cast the spell normally, two charges allows you to cast the spell as if you had used a 4th level spell slot, and 3 allow you to cast it as if you had used a 5th level spell slot, and so on.
Wizard's Bane regains 1d6 charges each day at dawn.
Cursed. While attuned to Wizard's Bane, you can't willingly unattune to it. Additionally, you have immunity to spells of 6th level or lower. This immunity cannot be overridden while you are attuned to the weapon, even helpful spells cast by allies (such as, but not limited to, healing spells) fail to affect you. Wizard's Bane even attempts to eat your own magic. You may still cast your own spells, albeit with a tremendous effort requiring a DC (10 + spell level) Constitution saving throw or the spell fails and the spell slot is consumed.
If left in a single place in the Feywild for a month, it creates an anti-magic field around it, per the spell. The field increases its radius 13% each day at dawn until it has a 13 mile radius. This anti-magic field will persist until the sword attunes to a new user.
Proficiency with a shortsword allows you to add your proficiency bonus to the attack roll for any attack you make with it.
Notes: Bonus: Magic, half-elf, elf, or fey creature, Damage, Combat, Cursed, Finesse, Light

History

The true origins of the Wizard's Bane are shrouded in the mists of time, lost to the annals of history. However, whispers of its past echo through the ages, painting a picture of a blade steeped in mystery and intrigue.   Once upon a time, in an era long forgotten, the sword was not a mere artifact but a symbol of power and authority, wielded by the mighty shadowy fey. These fey were beings of immense power, their existence intertwined with the very fabric of magic. The Wizard's Bane was their weapon, a tool that allowed them to manipulate and control the magic that flowed through their realm.   However, as is often the case with power, it bred conflict. One of the fey, disillusioned with their kin's use of the sword, decided to steal it away. This fey, whose name has been lost to time, embarked on a daring mission, managing to abscond with the sword and escape to the realm of humans.   In the Human realm, the fey found a family of humble origins but of strong character - the forebears of the Aermondi. To them, the fey entrusted the Wizard's Bane, along with a solemn oath - to protect the sword and keep it hidden. The Aermondi, understanding the gravity of the responsibility, accepted the oath and have since then guarded the sword, its true power and purpose known only to a select few.   The Wizard's Bane, thus, became a legend, its true history and purpose forgotten, replaced by tales and rumors. Yet, the sword remains, a silent testament to its past, waiting for the day when its true purpose might once again be revealed.
