Quring
Anything worth making spends some time in Quring, the industrial hub of the Idran empire. Factories and support building sprawl as far as the eye can see. Armies of academy-trained musicians live and work in the city, specializing in melodies that make and manipulate raw materials into consumer and commercial goods. Metal, wood, plastic... there are specialists in each type of instrument to get the best results for the appropriate material.
Demographics
The majority of those living in the city of Quring are working class, although the executives and other management of several companies also call Quring home. That said, the working class are largely skilled workers that live comfortably as they are well compensated for their labors. There are also many unskilled workers that call the city home and try to keep it in general working order.Geography
Quring lies on a fairly open plain surrounding the Quring river, from which it takes its name. There are some sporadic trees and lots of bushes, but fairly little else in the way of landscape. The land itself is flat with a general downslope towards the river.Making a Piece of Paper
For instance, let's take a piece of paper and walk it through the process of production. Raw materials are shipped into Quring on one of the main crossroads that snake through the city. The trees likely come from the white forest to the north on trucks with modern musical engines. Academy-trained musicians begin the process of production by unloading the trucks with stirring melodies from brass. These marches keep the trees moving in an orderly fashion into the production space. There are initial rooms where the trees are destroyed in a cacophony of percussion. The musicians must wear eye protection in order to prevent the pieces of wood from flying into their eyes, but eventually everything calms down as a lone french horn playing musician moves the pulp into the next room. The pulp is then formed into paper by the soft stirrings of woodwinds and dried by a string quartet. Another march moves the pages along and fits them nicely into reams that are then packed onto shipping trucks for distribution.Architecture
The city of Quring radiates out from the river in haphazard circles with differing architecture based on the rough decade in which it was built. It's interesting to trace the city's history in the way that the style of the buildings changed. Overall, the buildings are utilitarian with clean lines and humble building materials. Many buildings are built with bricks in the center of the city and the outer edges of the city tend more towards metals and glass. Things are built for a purpose in Quring and lack some of the flare of Oja or even Brana.
