Arcane Cohort or Imperial Secret Services.

The Arcane Cohort has existed in one form or another at least since the ninth century A.U.C., however the current incarnation is much more recent, and dates back to about 90 years ago. The previous version, called the Imperial Security Bureau, had come into conflict with the Praetorian guards, following a series of mutual accusations of corruption and subversion attempts. After this conflict increased to the point where the Praetorians even attacked the headquarters of the I.S.B. causing several deaths on both sides, the Emperor, acting in agreement with the parliament, dissolved both the Praetorian guards and the Bureau, a situation never seen before in the history of the Empire. Both institutions were promptly refounded, and the I.S.B. became the Arcane Cohort, taking up a name dating back to the dawn of the empire. The staff of the new Cohort came in part from the previous office, but most of the new members were chosen both among the armed forces and among the civilians, through a rigorous series of psychoattitudinal and physical tests, aimed at determining who could be suitable for the role . Some voices, coming from the Emperor's opponents, claimed at the time that the new agents had also been subjected to a kind of brainwashing to ensure their loyalty, but a parliamentary inquiry committee found nothing. This legend is still circulating in conspiracy circles, but is considered little more than rubbish by most of the population. Now the Cohort plays the role of both civil and military secret services, divided into a series of offices (Turmae) dedicated to different parts of the espionage work. The most well-known, who were also the protagonists of several fictional works including a well-known series starring an agent native of the province of Britannia are: Turma Hostis (external espionage), Turma Securitatis (internal espionage) and Turma Militaris (military espionage). It is said that there are at least 10 different Turmae, but the names of the others, as well as their field of activity and other information, are unknown to the public. The Cohort's main office is located in Rome, in an elegant building in the Celio district, however its offices are present in all the provincial capitals, as well as the planetary ones of the colonies. The Cohort obviously has many other locations scattered throughout the imperial territory, besides, as it is said, offices in the capitals of the other empires.
