A Soldier's Love
There's a song I heard whilst roaming around in your world and now it's stuck in my head. What are the lyrics about and why is it so catchy?
You were sitting in a tavern after a long day of traveling when the minstrel in the corner started strumming on her kecil. After a little bit her quiet but powerful voice filled every corner of the large room with a sorrowful tune.
"Down in the valley and across the river lay a bonnie sweet lass,
Staring at the clouds and lying on the grass.
She stares and wonders and dreams some more,
For her love has gone off to fight the long and bloody war.
The bonnie sweet lass jumped and stood,
When she heard the sound of horses from the wood.
And out of the trees and into the sun,
Rode men clad in uniform shouting that they’d won.
Towards the men, the bonnie sweet lass ran,
But among those turning home were not her man.
They told her he had fought valiantly and died,
And from the danger of the battle had not shied.
Down in the valley and across the river lay a bonnie sweet lass,
Stricken with fright and frozen with fear she had sunk to the grass.
The words of the men about her were consoling and sad,
But the words would never help her though the news was bad.
That night she wept, the bonnie sweet lass,
And above rose the mourning moon moaning, “Alas.”
Weeping for her lost love and for the life she’d never live,
And her heart to another she will never give.
The mourning moon sang its song of love long gone,
The love that was gone and buried while still a fawn.
The mourning moon sang of the broken heart,
From which the love for her man would never part.
Down in the valley and across the river lay a bonnie sweet lass,
Staring at the clouds and lying on the grass.
She stares and wonders and thinks some more,
Of what the Good Teacher still had in store.
I crossed the meadow and found her there,
My bonnie sweet lass lay on the grass, her face so fair.
I cried her name and up she came,
She ran into my arms and wept my name.
“They said you were dead, and all life was gone.”
And to this I replied, “My dear, that is dreadfully wrong.
I was hit on the head and down I went, but nothing could stop me,
Returning to you was what kept me going, your pretty face to see.”
Down in the valley and across the river lay my bonnie sweet lass,
Staring at the clouds and lying on the grass.
She stares and wonders and dreams some more,
For besides her lies her love forevermore."
You weren't quite sure what quite made you do it, but your allergies were either acting up or you were crying. Probably the former. Tossing a coin in the minstrel's hat that she had laid on her table, you swipe away the supposed allergy-induced tears.
