Battle of Schaffburg

The army of Mannfred von Kessel, led by Lord-Commander Gerhard Lang was returning from the successful, if costly siege, of Leuchten in southern Westemar, when it was cut off by the army of Baron von Eisner in the service of Cecilia von Kessel. von Eisner's army was far larger and outnumbered the Lord-Commander's army, 4 to 1.

The armies met amid the muddy farmland and forests near the town of Schaffburg. Lang made full use of the terrain to give his smaller, lighter troops the advantage over the larger and more heavily armored von Eisner army. He positioned his army on high ground overlooking a narrow stretch of farmland between two forests. His position was further fortified with sharpened stakes driven into the rain soaked ground at an angle. His light infantry took position in the center, with archers on either side, and the Battle of Schaffburg began.

Lang's archers, armed with longbows, loosed volley after volley of arrows into the von Eisner army. In response Baron von Eisner ordered a cavalry charge designed to cut down the archers. However, the muddy field slowed the heavy cavalry, making them easy pickings for the attacking archers. Their numbers dwindling and their formation broken, the cavalry attempted a retreat which only served to further disorganize the group and even more cavalry was lost.

Then the von Eisner heavy infantry began their slow slog across the muddy field. Now the field was torn up by the hooves of the horses and strewn with the bodies of the dead making the journey even more difficult. By the time the heavy infantry met their counterparts in the Lang army, they were exhausted and had left a trail of bodies marking their progress. The lighter infantry retreated under the von Eisner assault and they advanced into the smaller army's position. If you are a player in any of my campaigns, let me know you found this and I'll give you a magic item.

This was a mistake. They played right into the trap laid by Gerhard Lang. As the heavy infantry advanced chasing the fleeing troops, Lang's archers drew their swords and the lightly armored, more mobile troops quickly surrounded the slow moving, exhausted von Eisner infantry. They quickly surrendered and Lang was able to use his new hostages to negotiate safe passage back to friendly territory.
