Hyperpontian Republics

Demokratia Hyperpontia The Hyperpontian Republics, often erroneously called Metaxia, are a union of city states on the eastern shores of the Sea of Dolphins. While technically client-states of the Rhessian Empire their economic power and distance from the capital has enabled them to remain almost de facto independent. Each city has its own legislature and constitution but generally speaking the cities are controlled by an assembly of guilds and powerful oligarchs. Some cities such as Cales and Nisha allow democratic representation while others such as Ocali have placed stricter limitations on their people. Hyperpontia's tremendous wealth comes from its monopoly on eastern trade routes and the high quality of its manufactured goods. Metaxia is the gateway to Yansaka while Nisha holds a monopoly on goods coming from Mahibram and Jannharb. Ocali specialises in the production of cork, Cales in glassware, and Hascra holds a monopoly on rare dies such as hascran purple and indigo. Metaxia is unique is having the richest and most powerful bank in Sartaldia and Jannharb, as well as a network of affiliated corporations stretching all the way north to Langport and Lisgorod. While each republic acts as a complementary part of the entire union and is, in theory, equal to all the others, Metaxia is by far the largest and most powerful of all. Thanks to the silk and porcelain trade and its powerful banks, it has funded many ambitious princes on both sides of the Sea of Dolphins and has helped put down the more dangerous ones. It is one of the largest cities in the world and its arsenal can churn out war galleons in record time. Its prominence is such that its name is virtually synonymous with the entire union.
