Dead House

A dead house is one which had a Domovoi at some point in the past, but the Domovoi has now left for some reason.

Manifestation

To most people, dead houses are not visually different from any other house, although some of the more perceptive might notice that the house has a sadness that most houses don't. Most creatures of the Old Beliefs will immediately recognise a dead house (although some creatures will care about the implications more than others).   A dead house is not dangerous, however, it acts as a beacon to show malevolent creatures that the home is unprotected. For this reason, it often attracts other creatures, most commonly Kikimora, to fill the hole behind the stove where the Domovoi once dwelled.

Localization

Not every house that has no Domovoi is a dead house. A domovoi's presence must have been felt at one point for it to no longer be felt now. For this reason, only houses built in places where the traditions of the Old Beliefs are upheld at the time of building are likely to attract a domovoi in the first place, so dead houses are more common in smaller or more rural towns. The counterweight to this is that, because these places do follow the Old Beliefs, they are more likely to follow the rules that would keep a Domovoi content, and for this reason, dead houses are still uncommon in these places too.
