Glynda Goodwitch
Glynda Goodwitch is an elite Huntress and an alumna of Beacon Academy, where she is currently a professor, combat instructor and deputy headmistress.
By the age of 3 Glynda spontaneously unlocked her semblance during a confrontation with older children from Little Solia who picked on the orphans. As Little Solia was on the edge of Kingdom space and somewhat superstitious and isolated, most of the children and adults would mistake her telekinetic powers for witchcraft and wickedness(when confronted with this the young Glynda would frantically insist that she was a 'good witch') and her caretakers punished her severely whenever she used it, making her skip meals and spend long days in a small bedroom, alone. Glynda's only protection from the hostile mobs was her youth and the strict laws protecting residents of the orphanage- this coupled with desperate attempts to avoid punishment would begin a life long reverence for discipline and the rule of law. Despite her caretaker's disapproval, Glynda would continue to use her semblance in private, and after an attempt on the young girl's life by a drunken villager she would use it openly to defend herself. Glynda would emerge from the ordeal as a local legend and pariah, cowing most of her tormentors into submission but remaining extremely socially isolated. She spent most of her free time in the orphanage's small library, though the music room would become one of her favorite haunts as well after a traveling musician taught her the basics of the piano. Both rooms would be more or less abandoned by the other residents of the orphanage. By the age of 9, realizing that none of the locals would ever adopt her, Glynda adopted the surname Goodwitch. Glynda was an incredibly precocious child and spent most of her free time reading and studying, and despite being largely self taught she continually placed in the top percentile in Vale's standardized tests. Rumors of her powers, and her academic scores, would reach the desk of Headmaster Ozpin of Beacon Academy, and when Glynda was 12 he visited Cherry Lawn Orphanage to scout the girl. Concluding that she was intellectually gifted and extraordinarily powerful, Ozpin sponsored her admission to Pharos Academy and encouraged her to apply to Beacon afterwards. Eager to leave Little Solia, learn more about her powers and desperate to meet others like her, Glynda accepted.
Biography
Early Life
Glynda Goodwitch was born to unknown parents in the village of Little Solia on the Southern outskirts of Vale. Unnamed and unwanted, Glynda was immediately deposited at Cherry Lawn Orphanage, where she would spend the first 12 years of her life. For her earliest years she was known simply as Glynda- in cases where the child had no name it was custom for them to take the surname of their adoptive family. Glynda, however, would never be adopted.By the age of 3 Glynda spontaneously unlocked her semblance during a confrontation with older children from Little Solia who picked on the orphans. Huntress in Training
When she arrived at Pharos, Glynda was well ahead of the average first year academically and in combat, though she tended to rely on her semblance and was initially very weak in hand to hand combat. She would improve, but until her instruction at Beacon Glynda would operate as a ranged fighter first and foremost. Glynda was fascinated by dust but disliked complex weaponry, and the age of 14 she had adopted a riding crop - 'The Disciplinarian'- as her signature weapon. An unorthodox fighter and unparalleled mind, Glynda would become well known as the Pharos's top student. While generally admired by her peers and instructors, Glynda did not have any close relationships at Pharos; she was considered unapproachable by the peers that did not know her well and painfully awkward by the few who did. Her first real friendships would be forged during her time at Beacon, after she was partnered with Naomi Tekhelet on Team ORNG alongside Bartholomew Oobleck and Roman Torchwick. Team ORNG was at the top of their year for as long as they existed, but even though they were generally distant from the rest of the school they worked extraordinarily well together. Glynda would go on to form a friendly rivalry with her leader Barty, as they regularly traded the top academic rank, though Glynda was the undisputed superior combatant, and Naomi would become her close confidant. She regularly clashed with Roman, however, with his laidback and mischievous attitude disregard for the rules and endless teasing constantly getting under her skin. As Roman was best friends with Barty and romantically linked with Naomi, Glynda would often feel that she was the odd man out on the team, though eventually she and Roman would establish a mutual respect for the other's talents, if not their worldviews. Team ORNJ would win the Vytal Festival Tournament in their second year at Beacon, with Glynda carrying the team in the singles round, establishing an international reputation for herself and her team, and by their third year team ORNJ was undertaking missions rated for licensed Huntsman independently. Near the end of her third year at Beacon Glynda was secretly tasked by Professor Ozpin with investing rumors that a Beacon student was actively involved in the black market, smuggling contraband and even illegally unlocking auras. After weeks of watching her peers Glynda began suspecting Roman. Her suspicions were confirmed during a deployment to the rapidly deteriorating Mountain Glenn, an expansion of the Kingdom of Vale outside its traditional borders. The city was under constant assault by the Grimm, and the team was sent in to support the city investigate allegations of sabotage, eventually coming to the office of Victor_Merlot, CEO of Merlot_Industries(organization). There, Glynda and Barty discovered irrefutable evidence that Roman had been involved in the smuggling of heavily regulated chemicals to Merlot, and had extensive ties to the black market, having illegally unlocked the aura of several violent criminals for money. Roman would resist arrest by his teammates and Naomi would side with him. In the confusion Roman and Merlot managed to escape and Naomi was killed. Glynda believed that their conflict drew additional Grimm to Mountain Glenn in the assault that would finally overwhelm the surface of the city, and the remaining members of Team ORNG were too exhausted to prevent its destruction. Glynda would later speculate that had all four of them been working together and at full strength, they have have been able to hold the city's defenses, and she blamed herself for escalating and then refusing to defuse the conflict within the team. Glynda and Barty would barely escape with their lives, each heavily traumatized and guilt ridden over the loss of their teammates and countless civilian lives. The relationship between the surviving pair was badly damaged as well- neither could face the other, feeling responsible for the catastrophe. With the loss of half of its members, Team ORNG was disbanded, and Barty and Glynda graduated from Beacon a year early, going their separate ways.Elite Huntress
After receiving her license from the Huntsman Association, Glynda would bury herself in her work. Within a year of her graduation Ozpin formally inducted Glynda into The Brotherhood and began assigning her covert missions in his ongoing struggle against Salem. Glynda was also introduced to fellow Brotherhood member, then Colonel James_Ironwood, who she was regularly paired with on assignments. The two would begin a torrid affair in the summer of 69 AGW, which would abruptly end when Glynda refused to join James in the Special_Operatives_Unit. Without teammates to rely on, Glynda spent much of her free time training her previous weaknesses, becoming an expert in unarmed and close quarters combat. By the age of 25, Glynda had completed 347 missions from the Huntsman_Association and several dozen covert missions for Professor Ozpin, becoming the youngest Huntress in history to be designated as S-Class.Professor At Beacon
Fearing that Glynda was burning herself out and wanting to keep his trusted agent, lieutenant and confident close, in 76 AGW Ozpin offered Glynda the position of Professor and Combat Instructor at Beacon Academy after encouraging her aging predecessor to retire. Glynda reluctantly accepted, and 2 years later she was promoted to Deputy Headmistress, widely regarded among the students as extraordinarily strict, but fair and effective. She would struggle to maintain an emotional distance from her charges, whom she was less than a decade older than, and would begin dressing far more formally in an attempt to exaggerate her age. Publicly she was distant with most of her students, despite knowing them all by face and name and being intimately familiar with their strengths and weaknesses, the latter of which she would regularly critique. Privately she would hold deep pride and affection for many of them, and drilled them all ruthlessly to best prepare them for the difficult life ahead. When Professor Ozpin became worried about the research of her team leader, now Bartholomew Oobleck, into the ancient myths of Remnant that contained many secrets of The Brotherhood, Glynda advised hiring Oobleck as a Professor to exploit his expertise, monitor his work, and protect him from the warring secret factions. The two would rekindle a friendship, though not as close as their former bond as team mates. Glynda would also befriend fellow Beacon Professors Peter_Port and Thumbelina_Peach.Appearance
Glynda is a tall, blonde woman with a statuesque and curvaceous figure, considered unusually attractive even when compared to other huntresses. The age dampening effects of a strong aura gives her the appearance of a much younger woman, with Saphron remarking that a casually dressed Glynda 'didn't look a day over 19' well into her 30s. She usually dresses formally, even in combat situations, to reinforce her authority and keep a professional distance from her students, though in some cases, such as that of Coco Adel, this only serves to increase her appeal, with several students noting her as the archetypal 'hot, strict teacher'. Glynda generally keeps her hair tied back in a bun above her neck, though when let down it extends just past her shoulders. Her eyes are bright green and she wears thin ovular glasses. She has dangling teal earrings that match the hanging pendant on her collar. She wears a white long-sleeved, pleated top that has a wide keyhole neckline and gauntlet cuffs that flare in pleats at the wrist. Her lower body is covered by a black high-waisted pencil skirt with bronze buttons and black-brown stockings. She wears black boots with bronze heels and a cape that is purple inside and black on the outside. The cut of the cape is stylized to end in flames and arrows, with a row of diamond-shaped bronze beads on the back. Above this line of beads appears an emblem of a tiara that is her personal symbol. When not in use, The Disciplinarian appears to be collapsed and attached to the top of her right boot. In her younger years, Glynda was much slimmer and boyish, with Roman going so far as to call her a 'beanpole' during her first year at Beacon, before 'puberty hit her like a freight train' at some point during her second year.Personality
Glynda Goodwitch is a stern and demanding woman who accepts nothing less than the best from herself and the people around her. A consummate professional, many people regard her as cold- in truth, Glynda is deeply socially awkward and has difficulties expressing affection, which she simultaneously longs for and fears. To the few who do earn her trust, Glynda is fiercely loyal- she spent most of her adult life as Ozpin's right hand after he helped he offered her a way out of Cherry Lawn. This loyalty extends to the wider institution of Beacon- under her exterior she takes pride in her student's accomplishments and feels deep guilt for their failures and losses. Glynda believes she is responsible for her charges and her ruthless standards are driven by a desire to see them survive in a field with a painfully high death rate. Glynda's early experiences have given her a deep respect for justice and the rule of law, and she has little patience for delinquency or dishonesty of any kind. Glynda's hobbies include composing her own piano music, using her semblance to write and play works that are physically impossible for human hands. The opera is one of her few indulgences- alongside the occasional block of dark chocolate- and she often reads works of classical literature or philosophy.Abilities
Glynda is adept at close quarters combat and has extensive knowledge of dust manipulation, regularly infusing it with her telekinetic attacks. Glynda is also a skilled tactician and has incredibly strong analytical skills, although her combat strategies have been critiqued by some as orthodox. Semblance Glynda's semblance, Telekinesis, allows her to levitate and manipulate objects within a given range by projecting her aura outside of her body and forming a physical connection with the relevant objects. The force she can exert with her semblance is inversely proportional to the distance between herself and the object- in more exact terms her field of awareness functions as a sphere surrounding her body, with the maximum force she can exert at the edge declining linearly with the field's volume. The strength of this field could be increased with training, and by her early thirties Glynda could exert 10 tons of force within a 10 meter radius of her body. In addition to lifting large objects and paralyzing attackers at close to medium range, Glynda frequently accelerates smaller objects and debris near the center of her field to high velocities to act as improvised projectiles, including fragments of dust she carries other person for numerous elemental effects. All of these trajectories can be altered at will, extending her range of attack as far as she can see and concentrate. While considered by many as unbeatable, Glynda's semblance has its weaknesses. Since she has to focus on an object to manipulate it, anything that could break that focus disrupts her semblance. Years of training and high situational awareness have allowed her to advance to a point where she can use it under battlefield stress and even without having the target in her immediate line of sight, but anything that obstructs her vision or splits her attention will decrease its effectiveness. Since she must form connection between her aura and her target to use her semblance, any semblance that can absorb aura, such as Jaune's Echo, makes the user immune from direct manipulation, although not from strikes from other accelerated objects. Semblances that require a link between two auras can also exploit the connection forged by Telekinesis for their user's own purposes.Bio
