Onfalu's island

With its variety of different ecosystems, spanning from mid-range mountains to marshes, to uncontaminated clear sea, plateaus and vast cavern systems, the mayor island of Onfalu and its minor archipelagos are considered by many a microcontinent with a flora and fauna unique to its territory.   The isolation of the continental plaque is probably the cause of a common characteristic that differentiates Onfalu's terrestrial species from their continental cousins, the small size.   Deers, boars, foxes, horses, donkeys, wild cats, mouflon, bat and hare are all much smaller than what's found elsewhere in the world, and in some cases, the restricted genetic pool developed some unique characteristic like the albin variant of the local donkey.   Onfalu's skies are the reign of numerous birds of prey, among which the symbolic Eleonora's falcon, and two vultures (the bearded vulture and griffon vulture). The salines ponds along the southern coast are home to large colonies of the pink flamingo.   The cavern systems host a few species of salamanders found nowhere else on the planet, and their sea entrance is the nesting site of sea turtles and monk seals.   The woods are mainly formed by helm and downy trees in the mountains and cork oaks and olive trees at lower levels. The local Mediterranean bush is rich with hundreds of endemic species of bushes and flowers, herbs, wild orchids and mushrooms.
Giara horse
It is a small wild horse whose habitat is restricted to a plateau in the centre of the island, wild in temperament, some of them are nonetheless bred outside their original habitat for exhibition purposes and are the favourite transport means of many istrias.
Mouflon
This is a type of wild mountain sheep that live in the Gennargentu and Supramonte chains. It's one of the favourite mounts of the Janas and it's bred in small number with the local domestic sheep to obtain the losto, a hybrid with tasty meat.
Albino Donkey
The albin donkey is a variant of the local small donkey that got isolated on the Asinara island and developed the characteristic genetic mutation that gives them a candid fur and blue eyes. The population in the wild is of ~70 heads but some individuals are kept in captivity in zoos and private breeding facilities.

Pink Flamingo
The pink flamingo or Genti arrubia "Red people" as they are nicknamed in Onfalu are a relatively recent arrival in the faunistic picture of the island, but have been swiftly adopted as a symbol that the ecologically careful choices of Onfalu's people are giving their fruit if such a beautiful animal chose the outskirts of its major city to rise its chicks.
Caddhos Birdes
In the Giara, among the Giara horses, some swear to have seen some horses with green mantle, the legenday Caddhos birdes that bring good luck to their owners. It is not known if the sightings are real of caused by Cannonau indulgence, but any attempt to trace one of these fairy creatures and capture it has been so far unsuccessful.

I love the examples of the animals and plants that can be found on Onfalu. I think the albin donkey is my favourite. :)   Really cool image from NASA, too. I really like how you've listed a bunch of alternative names for the island too.

I like how you describe a number of the animals found on the island. Sounds like a great place to explore.
