Personal history

Part of a large merchant family from Halen Xarrakas Denurious was trained to count gold before he could crawl. While his family was not large enough to Challenge the Dragon's Coffers they were influential enough to ally with the houses that could. To this end the Denurious clan of merchants traveled across the land in search of wealth, the more you could bring to the family the greater your standing. When Xarrakas' father the Lord Jarkris Denurious grew too sick to continue the largest caravan the family had to temporarily substitute the Jarkris least profits be lost. Xarrakas attempted to take his fathers caravan but his uncle Marlasar, older brother to the Jarkris, took the control by exploiting Xarrakas own lack of experience and little profits he produced while running one of his families stores. Instead Xarrakas was given one of the smaller caravans and told to prove himself least his uncle usurp his position as heir.   Xarrakas became known as the "Gold Counter" for his miserly ways as he did everything he could to earn an extra gold. For some time he took risks and earned a steady profit even managing to impress his father Jarkris was not getting any better the dragonbreed lord was stable enough. But everything came to an end when his merchant caravan broke down while traveling. Without spending gold to repair the aging caravan several wagons had all managed to break down over a muddy road that supposedly would have been a shortcut had the rains not turned the trail into a mire for the caravan. A team was sent back to the last city to have been visited to procure the proper wood, tools, and carpenters to repair the wagons. But word spread and a crew of bandits saw the disabled caravan as easy picking. The following day word got back to the young Denurious that the carpenter was on his way and would reach the caravan by nightfall. Unfortunately the bandits reached the caravan first and they offed what few guards and teamsters a deal, surrender the goods and they would be allowed to leave or to join. Every guard and teamster switched allegiance joining the bandits rather than die for their miserly employer. "Gold Counter" tried to fight back but he was easily outmanned and left for dead. Were it not for the carpenter he would have died on the road.   With what little resources his family left him Xarrakas returned to learn carpentry from the man who saved his life. This was part in thanks and part to better understand and learn from his previous mistake. As he began working with wagons and tradesmen whom he had seen himself above of, Xarrakas came to have a better understanding of the life of a caravan and how best to manage one. Finally Xarrakas was ready to rejoin his family work only to learn his family would not have him. Having drained the last of his coffers to become an expert carpenter Xarrakas was seen as a fool and madman and subtly removed from the family ledgers, his obsession with righting himself having blinded him to this until now. His father had died of his sickness and his Uncle had taken his place as head of the family, all Xarrakas had was the title to the ancestral home that had been willed to him.   Destitute and unwanted Xarrakas was forced into selling his family home to his Uncle just to survive. With what little gold his Uncle had given him for the title Xarrakas went to the merchant quarter in Halen to find another dragoborn family he could buy a caravan stake from. But word had spread and Xarrakas was considered too much a risk to be relied upon. The dragonbreed merchant was about to buy passage to some distant city in hopes his shame would not follow when he noticed the Bluewheel wagons departing a ship, shocked to see signs of rot he called out to the dwarf that his wagon had less than a day before the rotten wheel would break, and as if by prophecy the wagon broke down right there in the docks. Shocked by Xarrakas observation "Lord" Churchill questioned how the dragonbreed could have foresaw the accident. After helping fix the wheel and talking over a drink the master of the Bluewheel Company offered Xarrakas a generous stake in his company in return for the dragonbreed looking after the wagons. Xarrakas negotiated himself as head carpenter, paymaster and quartermaster; his fears of his past now allayed as he could now protect the caravan that was now part his. He is still called "Gold Counter" but now it is for his dedication to insuring the caravan is wealthy and everyone is happy.
