Gods, Spirits, and Adventurers

In Saekai, many people's lives are inexorably linked with the hidden realm of spirits and gods. Such people don't just pray to the powers that be; they draw strength and magic from them. Many of these people become adventurers or heroes, emboldened by their supernatural connection to these higher beings.

Spirits

Druids are the archetypical example of the intersection between the mortal world and the spirit world. Some sapient beings are born with the innate ability to tap the nascent magic of spirits, and many of these people become druids. As their experience grows, druids are able to manifest stronger and stronger natural magic until, at the height of their power, the only difference between a druid and a true spirit is that the druid is not bound to a single region or object.   Hunters seem akin to druids to laypeople, as both sorts have the ability to tap into spirit magic. However, whereas a druid's magic is her own, a hunter's magic comes from his companion. Hunters draw strength from a spirit in animal form, who chooses the hunter and forms a supernatural bond with them. This bond is mutual agreement to grant one another strength and protection; the hunter is granted magical enhancement, and the spirit gains a lifelong free-willed companion.   Shamans can, through ritual, prayer, and maintenance of a harmonious mindset, briefly peer into the spirit world. During these jaunts, shamans supplicate or coerce the spirits to grant them a taste of their divine power.

Gods

Clerics are the archetypal heroes of the gods. Clerics dedicate themselves to a god and are rewarded with divine magic in exchange for their prayers and faith. The most powerful clerics can perform true miracles in the name of their god, as if they were a divine being themselves.   Paladins are similar to clerics, but they do not draw magic and favor from the gods with constant, measured prayer. Instead, paladins get the attention of a god with sheer righteousness and devotion to a cause. Should the gods find that cause agreeable, they grant this warrior magic to shield them from harm during their mission.
