Empress Thaumaria

Empress Thaumaria

“Thaumaria is one of the most important figures in our history, but she remains a controversial figure to this day. What we don’t know about her could fill more books than the things we do. In spite of limited evidence about her character from contemporary sources, we do know this for certain: Thaumaria believed herself to be special. She believed that she had been chosen by a god to perform a sacred duty, and she would let nothing distract her from it.”   Professor Blanche Cortez, Uncovering the Thaumarian Empire.

Personal history

Little is known about Thaumaria’s life prior to the founding of the Thaumarian Empire. In official writings declaring war on sovereign nations, Thaumaria claimed to have been chosen by a God from birth to fulfil a sacred duty and bring about an era of justice. She was maybe born in the city of Lapos, given that most imagery of her from the era depicts her wearing traditional Laposian attire, but this is purely circumstantial. What is known for definite is that she was born at least fifteen years prior to Juno, and she claimed to have taken her first city at age twenty. It took her about eight years to consolidate power and start harassing Juno’s home country.   Thaumaria was killed on the field of battle by Juno. Eyewitness accounts on both sides reported seeing a flash of light and the Empress looking shocked as she fell. Her private guard of Magi failed to revive her, and upon realising that their beloved Empress was dead, fell into despair. Unfortunately for Juno, Thaumaria’s Magi Guard became enraged and erratic in their despair, throwing themselves at her in vengeance for their fallen leader. Although Juno’s loyal forces managed to rescue her, the damage was done.

Eyes
It is said that Thaumaria had grey eyes, but what is notable is that she often wore a heavy gold mask as part of her crown when receiving foreign ambassadors and holding court, so few ever saw her face as it was.
Hair
Thaumaria’s hair was blonde, long, and frequently pinned up with gold adornments. During battle she would let her hair down and ride her war chariot with hair streaming behind her.
Quotes & Catchphrases
Thaumaria was considered a great and inspiring orator, but despite this there are very few notable quotations. The only one that remains still in usage today is the following.   "Being chosen is not simply a blessing. Being chosen does not mean that work is not needed, that fortitude is not needed. If you are chosen for a task, it is because it believed you have the willpower and the ability to work hard enough to achieve it. Not that it will fall into your lap."
