Magic in Samarya

In addition to polytheism of the Wishmakers, Samaryans practice animism, or the belief that every creature, object, and natural phenomena in the world has a spirit. These spirits are said to be the source of all magic, which is divided into two categories: ambient and divine.   Ambient spellcasters channel energy from the world around them. Throughout the universe, there is ambient magical energy leftover from the Wishmakers' spellcasting, as well as magical energy naturally emanated from all spirits. Wizards, Bards, and Artificers tap directly into this energy through resonance via meditation (i.e. brain waves), sound, and machinery/chemistry, respectively. This can take years of study to perfect. Through bloodlines or sheer genetic luck, sorcerers have natural affinities for tapping into ambient magic.   Divine spellcasters form a direct relationship with particular spirits or divine entities in order to gain access to magic. As the power of a deity is tied to their worshippers, immense devotion, offerings, or generally acting in a way that pleases the spirit leads to more power. For example, an Oathbreaker Paladin may bring entertainment and delight to more mischievous spirits, and they may grant them powers they would have otherwise lost by breaking their Oath. In believing further in their patrons and battling foes in their names, Clerics and Warlocks will find themselves growing stronger. Druids often borrow power from spirits of nature wherever they go.   How much the spirit and their caster actually communicate varies heavily, but generally, the more powerful the entity, the more difficult it will be to talk to them. If Hera was in this world, for example, she would only be able to communicate with Efreeti via spells, magical items, or extremely good rolls. If you really want to have a divine entity best friend, let me know what you're thinking and we can talk through it.   Partial casters, such as Rangers, Arcane Tricker Rogues, or Eldritch Knights, can draw from some combination of the two types of spellcasting.   Speaking of Eldritch power and necromancy, there will generally be an association with negative spiritual energy or darker deities when using magic of this type.
