Cald of Firstfort
The Cald of Firstfort is a hereditary rank in the Kingdom of Weldmere, responsible for the governance of Firstfort and the surrounding villages. As a Cald - a mid-ranking noble - they also have lower ranking nobles as their tenant vassals, spreading their authority over a greater area.
The Cald of Firstfort was the first noble title to be re-established in Weldmere after the Exile, and was granted in celebration of the first victory of the Reconquest. As such, it has remaining social prestige, and the holder is the pre-eminent Cald in their Duxia (Talhorn) - and one of the most prestigious Calds in all of Weldmere. Their seat is at First Fort itself - a pre-Exile tower, now transformed into an impressive castle.
As well as their historical prestige, the Calds of Firstfort sit on the north-eastern most border of Talhorn and all Weldmere. This gives them an inevitable role in diplomacy and trade - particularly with the The Redfern Commonwealth, the Kingdom of Eyoit, and the Alderi Dominion.
History
Wilfer Teargon was the commander of the Allied Scouts at the time of the Reconquest - a mix of Welds and Bolmor on horses and Elosi on wardogs. There had been little use for mounted reconnaissance with all of the civilised world hidden behind fortifications, but Wilfer had formed the force as proof to all that they would soon become an offensive army - driving back into their homelands. He was eager to advance - he was the third son of a former eastern Weldic lord, who had grown up thinking of (what was then) Hakon's Tower as the edge of civilisation - he had spent five decades dreaming of marching past it to his home.
The Allied Scouts reached the ruined tower three weeks after advancing from Guthrum's Gate, and faced three days of hard fighting - first into the ruins of the fort, then two days repulsing Empty who had invaded the ruins when they first fell. On the third day, King Conrad's main vanguard arrived. To celebrate his arrival back on Weldic soil, Wilfer Teargon was named the new Cald of the fort and tower, and the tower was briefly known as Teargon's Tower. Later, Conrad agreed to Wilfer's petitions, and the title was duly renamed to the Cald of Firstfort.
