Blue moon Atoll
Long ago it was said that the moon kissed a volcano and when that volcano went to sleep in its place laid an island. When the island sank beneath the sea, coral built on it's foundation. When the coral grew so large that the waves warred with it's bones. The fallen were ground to sand and the ring that was once a battlefield, became a cradle.
The Blue moon atoll is a tropical location inhabited intermittently by mer. The location is popular for new mothers for its shallow entrances and warm, plentiful waters. The atoll hosts a thriving barrier reef surrounding it that provides a host of small fish and other sea-life shelter from the tumultuous currents of the open sea. This wildlife in turn attracts predators other then the mer, including a variety of sharks and dolphins. However, the entrances to the atoll's lagoon are both narrow and shallow. This prevents most sharks and dolphins from entering the lagoon leaving the largest predator to inhabit the lagoon the mer. Waves are also broken against the surrounding island ring and barrier reef making the deep lagoon very calm. So the Atoll is used by many nomadic mer groups to raise their young.
Along with careful watches to make sure kits dont wander out, or the rare exception to wander in, Blue Moon Atoll is the a perfect stronghold. This has been taken advantage of several times in it's history with multiple mer factions attempting to control it either to demand tribute from those that use it or to block it from others using it alltogether.
Finally after a particularly violent battle between several clans a cleric of the Tide Queen became so disgusted with the all the clans' juvenile squabbling over a piece of reef that only has use to small groups of families with young she gathered the clerics of the Tide queen from all the clans and took the atoll as a holy site. From then on the atoll which had been named over and over by each controlling faction was named Blue Moon Atoll for the Tide Queen who is also the mer patron of the moon.
