Chimeric Mutation Syndrome

Raw egg slid from Wulfric's face as his classmates that had thrown it laughed.

"Well then." His face curled into a fanged grin. "It's a shame there isn't a common sense elective. Not only did you steal from the chicken coop you also apparently provoked a rabid beast." With a practiced flick of his hand the remainder of the egg joined the rest on the floor as he magically cleaned himself off.

"Why don't you run on and cower behind a teacher's coat-tails like the child you are?"
Chimeric Mutation Syndrom refers to those afflicted with mutations and scarring caused by having been attacked with some kind of mutaginic spell or those who parents were affected by one and passed mutated traits down to them. While modern emergency response equipment has allowed rescue teams to arrive in time to boost the short term survival rates of new victims long term survival has been an ongoing medical and social struggle.

Appearance

Despite this the insidious nature of Necrotic Mutagen spells prevents a complete reversion to human appearance most of the time as their genetics have been already tampered with to a point where therapeutic removal has a low success chance and a high death rate. This leaves victims with several often debilitating side effects such as damages to their ability to produce natural offspring, long term health issues stemming from mutations to their organs and other bodily functions, and a long non exhaustive list of cosmetic mutations and scarring.   Common lingering mutations include
  • abnormal internal toxin production
  • damages to individuals ability to speak from alterations to vocal chords or mouth
  • increased eye sensitivity or damaged eye sight
  • altered dietary needs
  • vestigial limbs
  • abnormal hair growth as well as growth of similar keratin based features such as feathers, fur, scales or spines.
  • bony or hard keratin growths such as horns or antlers.
  • chronic pain
  • and malformed limbs
  • Historical Significance and origins

Mutation spells have existed almost as long as spell casting and do have possible applications in medicine but these have not been pursued in almost a century. Historically mutation spells were haphazard and short lasting. The mutations being such that nothing cast with it would survive vary long but this changed with the discovery of genetics. Suddenly as soon as the method in which traits were passed down were discovered many new experiments began causing the world to enter a chimera craze.   Chimera rituals were the precursors to the modern day mutation spells that are so reviled. While many began as ways to solve problems like optimizing crop harvests, strengthening livestock, and safer fireproof fibers they also became a tool of oppression and violence. Warlords and aristocrats jumped on hard to trace murder methods that were a spectacle and guard dogs with iron teeth and paralyzing bites. Eventually rumors began of human chimera experimentation. Officially human trials weren't even in the books yet but that wouldn't necessarily stop people.

Rumors continued to grow, a man in the west has created an artificial sphinx out of the woman they had a crush on and her house cat.
Someone in the east made chickens that would interbreed with normal chickens but their offspring meat and eggs would contain slow acting toxins.
At some point when tensions were at their height and different people were almost at the point of open riots someone took advantage of all of that terror and made every nightmare come true.
11am on a warm spring day in a small coastal town square people were gathering for a day out with their families. An odd gasping noise was heard coming from the back of a nearby alleyway and several locals approached to investigate when all hell broke loose. A pale blotchy creature broke from, rolled almost from the truck screaming killing two men in its tumble from the truck with its spiked insectoid legs before stumbling into the square. It proceeded to kill and partially eat five others before being put down by local law enforcement and residents.

Later the creature was identified as a young man named Alexus Hornwright who had been fused with several kinds of arachnid, killed, and necromanticly bound to his own corpse in a way that circumvented the usual issues caused by major physical changes and the fusion of two organisms so barely related to each other. Alexus had gone missing a week before after an argument with his brother. It had been assumed that he had gone to the neighboring city for a couple day to cool off as was typical of him until no word from him was received from him an entire three days later.

A statue in his honor and the honor of other similar victims known and unknown was erected later looking out to sea "to better tomorrows". After the tragedy the laws against Mutative spells were passed before the ink on the paper had dried.

    History of cure efforts

People's terror was so great that it took many years for the political climate to recover enough that research into assisting victims had adequate funding. It wasn't just helping them but the fact that to help them you would have to also fund research into mutative spell research that held it back for so long. To this day there are groups that have abandoned modern magics related to the body altogether even going so far as to scorn simple spells to remove body hair or aid scabbing.   Finally, methods were developed that as long as the soul's connection to the body was not too damaged rituals to reverse many of the physical repercussion's, enough to live something resembling a normal life. No personality changes or random homicidal tendencies beyond what is in the range of explanation as any other kind of trauma victim have been reliably observed. Despite this victims still face stigma against them. False tales of mutations and madness being passed via touch and allocations of secretly eating wildlife and travelers raw marring what once were trusted neighbors reputations.   Work to combat this is still ongoing but many afflicted choose to live with others like them that understand their plight and wont judge them. An entire new ethnic group was identified named "Halcyonite" after a ranch Green Halcyon, that eventually became a small village owned by a victim Alabaster Griffon that sought to help others in her plight.
