Mana storms

Storms have been a destructive phenomena capturing human imagination for as long as imagination has existed. Its not surprising with how the driving sheets of rain and howling winds suggest threats real and illusory. Flashes of lightning cast strange shadows and thunder growls like an angry beast big as a mountain.   Some storms are more then just the illusion though, some are charged with more then electricity. These are mana storms, a weather phenomena charged with magical energy.   Mana storms are hard to predict because there is no solid idea on why they form. Currently the popular explanation is weak spots in the veil between the mortal realm and the spirit real form and excess mana leaks through from there. This cannot be proven or disproven until a method of measuring the amount of mana in the atmosphere and where exactliy other realms are.   Mana storms are dangerous enough and sudden enough that there is always a weather warning issued as soon as one is identified. On top of ussual severe thunder storm conditions such as high winds, excess rain, and electrical surges mana storms also cause mana surges. Mana surges affect magi-tech equipment and magically charged matrixes giving them a chance to overload and misfire. Casting is also dangerous in mana storms as the additional mana in the air can cause unpredictable changes in the range and power of a spell.   It is advised that people use dampener nets for their equipment and refrain from casting outdoors or with windows open. In most places property damage and injury caused by spell miscasts in mana storms can be ruled as criminal recklessness and negligence on the casters part.   There has been some study on mana storms as a source of renewable energy but their unpredictable nature and damaging additional effects have proven this unfeasible at current technological and magical levels.
