Never-ending Drought
For most, there is no Saraya without the sands, salt-flats, and struggle for survival. They hear tales of when green was a common colour, myths of the magnificent blue of what would have been called the ocean, and believe them to be tall tales meant to give hope to children when there is none. These legends include those of so called ships, pirates, jungles and even water falling from the sky. Not even children's' wildest dreams can conjure up what the world used to be.
The truth is that these stories were true, once, before the land was wrung out of water by the rampant sorcerers of old. The effects of it were subtle, at first, only visible in the long term with a healthy dose of hindsight. The water they used to fuel their magic, disappeared forever. So eventually, after wars were fought over the last scraps of easily obtainable water, only to end up using it all up again, the sorcerers with such motivations died out, leaving behind a dying world.
The people, creatures, and even plants have been forced to adapt and evolve to survive in the forsaken land that remains as it dries up even further. New methods of farming, such as Pods o' the Soul on the salt flats, Bolt Bat hunting near the Salt Crystal Caves, help them get easy water. Meanwhile, animals that used to live in the ocean evolved into such things as the Glock and the Daggler.
The cultures of Saraya also suffered a blow, and only those that scrounge for and ration their resources very tightly have survived, with the rare counter culture such as the Revellers rising up to try to combat it, often falling flat very quickly. Battles and politics still occur, but rather than gold, the true valuable resource is now water.
