39 - Messed Up Together
General Summary
"We should be messed up together." - Edalweiss, to Celder
As Celder and Finn wait for the results of their fliers, Kayin visits the palace to confirm information about his book's writings. An older scholar introduces him to a young man named Bartholomew, a talent in interpreting infernal and abyssal texts. He identifies the writings as Infernal, and excitedly exclaims that Kayin might carry infernal influence. This troubles Kayin greatly, and he leaves confused with this information.
Edalweiss spends her days scribing new spells and scrying on the castle of Esylalea with her newly purchased silver mirror. She periodically surveys the Queen and her daily routine, with the king curiously absent. She learns of the ongoing conflict with the Bloodland rebels against their southern walls; the military believes they have kidnapped the King. Edalweiss finds her children in the underground barricades locked up and chained, and she comforts them that she will return soon. Without being able to glean any information on the king or the wizard's tower, she communicates with a maid named Madeline, who says she will do her best to learn about entrances to the barricades.
On the evening of the second day following the attack, Edalweiss helps Celder and Finn realize their posters neglected to mention a meeting location. They run into the night, fixing their fliers, as Kayn and Edalweiss visit Zigzag. They drink random magical potions - one changes Edalweiss's hair to a rainbow of hues, and the other changes Kayin into a woman. They drink heavily into the night, doing their best to cheer up a downcast Celder.
After they pass out in Celder's room, the party is awoken by tavernkeep Sol about two guests interested in their guild. The first is Drud Dudley, a tall, muscular man who insists on the pure form of unarmed man-to-man combat. He soundly bests Finn in a one-on-one and is accepted into the guild with some reservations. The second visitor is an elderly tiefling woman by the name of Pricipa Vadu, revealed to be the grandmother of Celder's nemesis Skarr Vadu. She seems earnest in her request to support the guild in a motherly fashion, though she has little information to offer about her estranged lineage. After a spread of hearty dishes (steamed dumplings, noodle soup and chicken pot pie), Celder reluctantly welcomes her to the guild.
On the fourth day, the party is visited by Wren of the Brimshire, who requests a debriefing on the situation. She informs them that while Solis is beyond the jurisdiction of the southern Brimshire base, she asks for continued updates on the situation, especially on Bix and Mellow in particular. Edalweiss asks if her familiar can be sent to the east, and eventually settles on sending her tressym via Brimshire briefcase to the South, that it may be sent to the eastern Brimshire base in the Bloodlands.
The evening once more ends in degeneracy - in an unlikely turn of events, Edalweiss and Kayin both pull gender-swapping potions once more. They depart towards the bathhouse, dragging along a miserable Finn recently cursed with a 'high-heat' potion. Drud Dudley runs off to finally challenge Edalweiss fair and square.
