49 - Veserin and the Vines
General Summary
After a moment of respite following the Sky Vine's defeat, the magic coursing through the courtyard wasted no time in resurging; a sudden spread of new vines bursting from the Sky Vine moved to entangle the party. Kayin and Urie narrowly managed to escape, scorching and slicing a clear path as most of the party was engulfed and immobilized.
As they raced across the courtyard, they watched as a gargantuan wolf leaped over the castle walls, landing within the courtyard. It raced towards them; Urie and Kayin threatened to attack it, but in a familiar voice the giant wolf urged them to climb on. Hesitantly the pair leapt onto the wolf's back, and it climbed atop the castle walls to avoid the spreading vines.
Now above the immediate threat, the wolf shifted to a familiar face; Veserin, leader of the Bloodland Raiders. He shared with Kayin and Urie that magical disasters were occurring all over the city, damaging his tribe's efforts. He reasoned that the wizard's tower within the castle grounds was the likely cause, gesturing towards the three beams of verdant light extending towards the sky above the wizard's tower as the two watchposts beside it. Kayin and Urie suggested striking at the wizard's tower, but Veserin disagreed, demonstrating that the tower was defended by an arcane force field. They instead decided to strike at the nearby watchtowers, hopefully quelling the towers of light.
The team struck out towards the northern watchtower first, nimbly navigating through the vine-filled courtyard. After breaking in, they encountered an elven mage and his acolytes upon the top floor, casting spells into an emerald crystal in the center of the room. The team quickly disposed of the casters, Kayin taking the mage's spellbook. It seemed the emerald crystal in the center was the source of the skyward light - Urie cast his eldritch blade blasts towards it, and watched as the spell disappeared into the crystal. Outside, the team saw the blast descend from the skies, much mightier than before, destroying a house farther within the city. He continued casting, and with little understanding of the crystal, one of the blasts slammed upon the tower, dealing tremendous damage to the three of them. Urie cuts the vines connected to the crystal and pockets it.
After a moment of reflection and respite, Veserin, Urie and Kayin continued towards the southern tower, quickly disposing of the mage and her acolytes within. In this tower, Kayin severs the vines and takes the second crystal, watching the lights diminish from the rooftops. The arcane barrier protecting the main wizard's tower dissipates. Urie takes from the mage a dark rod, a large cauldron, and an enchanted dress.
Noting the animated vines outside beginning to calm down, the three return to the rest of the party to free them of their bindings.
