Se02Ep02
General Summary
After a little yoga and some Capri Suns, we descended into the tomb of Nabiti. As far as tombs I’ve been in, this is one of the liveliest. We were ambushed almost immediately by Lizardfolk with poison-tipped arrows. It was mighty potent stuff, about twelve times the strength of the average nightshade you’d find at market. Three guesses and one dead purple wurm as to where they got it. Lucky we were able to loot some. After routing the first few squads of lizard wizards and their pet dinosaurs, we regrouped and went over our loot. The Dinos were Huge, but a cursory glance at their bodies with my eye for Nature revealed they were merely juvenile. Which sent chills down my spine thinking about the size of whatever spawned them.
Once things calmed down, we discovered a number of keys in different shapes. They matched square, hexagon and triangle divots set by the doors deeper into the tomb; and wouldn’t open until we matched them up. We had two triangle keys and one hexagon. Luckily my talent for lining up shots was heavily grounded in a background in advanced geometry. Thusly I was able to recall that two triangles ...make a square!
Amontek, Our tabaxi guide was unusually nervous to proceed. Once we opened the last door, we discovered why. The big V hieroglyphics with eyes in them everywhere probably should have been a clue, but it wasn’t a dollar sign so I personally didn’t realize this tomb was a hiding place for the eye of Vecna.
Our guide sure did, though. Because he wasted no time booking it in there, turning back into a Rakshasa and popping the cursed thing into his big empty head. I say empty, because in about six seconds we’d dogpiled him and ground him into kibble. So much for this terrifying foe everyone but me had the pleasure of being so nervous about meeting.
I can’t give us too much credit though, after all, we did fall for his ruse. That and based on what I’m personally privy to vis-a-vis fiendish folklore, we might see him again once he’s reconstituted. Glad I didn’t land the killing blow, for once. After wrapping the gruesome trophies (hand and eye of vecna) in lead foil and stowing them in my increasingly unsanitary bag of holding, we made good our escape right into the jaws of mama Dino, waiting outside. Luckily, a newly acquired magic ring allowed Losten to tame her on the spot. Well done him and his new show pony. Her name is Boots. We hoofed it, or perhaps clawed, back to town to suss out glass staff since our initial canvas was a bust. It wasn’t until nightfall we were able to pin him down in the bad part of town. A place called “The Hunt.”
We soon learned why nobody goes there as we were set upon by giant worms (wurms? Wyrms?) that could burrow through solid rock, swallow you up, or make you sick just by being near ya.
Ark turned one of em into a turtle and then dropped it from 200 feet in the air. I’m not sure if the other one had a proper head but I put a bolt through it anyway.
Bloodied but unbroken, we surrounded the hovel that glass staff was squatting in and prepared to introduce him to his maker.
Rakshasa jerky, when paired with fried Sathaq grubs is very reminiscent of a bacon and omelet ensemble.
Notes
Here’s my take on our current situation. I apologize for the upcoming wall of text: I know I was not here for the latter half of the last game, so I apologize if I leave out details or information, but based upon what I read in Rodger’s latest summary, I’m not sure that immediately picking a fight with Glass Staff is the best idea. Hear me out. We (and by we, I mean you guys) just took out the Rakshasa who had both the eye AND the hand of Vecna. The only defenses we have against anyone discovering/taking these items from us are sheets of lead foil and our fighting skills. Speaking from Rava’s perspective, I’m confident that we’re strong enough to fend off most attackers, but we know for a fact that Glass Staff is intent on becoming a lich.
Now, here’s where things get interesting in my opinion. If my memory is correct, we destroyed the page containing the ritual necessary for a person to become a lich. In addition, thanks to our “deal with the Devil,” we now know that Glass Staff is nearby. Again speaking as Rava, I see three potential reasons why Glass Staff is in Per-Bastet. First, he may be unaware that we destroyed the page containing the ritual and is in the city looking for other items he needs to complete his transformation. Second, he may be here for unrelated business. Third, and most interesting, Rava finds it funny that Glass Staff and the Rakshasa appear to have been in the same place twice now: first in the cave where Rava was locked up, and now Per-Bastet.
What if Glass Staff has realized that he can’t transform and is now seeking alternative means of attaining power? Namely, what if he’s in Per-Bastet because he was told that he could find Vecna’s relics here? And now we’re just going to rush towards him with these relics on our person? Rava suggests that we first find a way to completely and utterly destroy the eye and hand of Vecna before doing so. Rava doesn’t know if we can do that ourselves or if that needs to be done magically.
If we decide to destroy the items first, we could take them back to Neverwinter if there are people we know who can do that. However, we run the risk that the bubble has gone up in the meantime. If that’s the case, are any of you originally from outside Neverwinter? Are there people we can trust in these areas? Rava’s from a country called Calaunt far to the north, but it is ruled by a mad magic-wielding king (whom Rava has sworn to dethrone personally) and also may currently be under siege by giants, so he doesn’t think that’s an option. Nevertheless, we can try going there if the bubble’s up and we don’t have any other alternatives. If we decide to take care of the items first and need to leave Per-Bastet, also remember that we have the option of relocating Glass Staff in the future per the conditions of our deal with the Devil. However, I leave the decision to the group. What say you, fellow Doorkickers?
