corpse thistle

The corpse thistle is considered by most a weed, nuisance, or even an ill omen. This is largely related to the traditional thought that the plant only grows over unburied corpses far from mortal settlements. It is a wide spreading weed with seed carried by the winds. It tends to find purchase in areas not well traveled such as deep forests, but has been known to crop up just about anywhere.

When the weed appears in more settled areas superstition attributes it to a hidden murder. Conversely, some say the plant is placed by the gods (it is unclear which deity but Raz'ka who presides over death or Eo goddess of nature are the most likely) over bodies that are not properly laid to rest to prevent them from rising due to the Curse of Undeath. In areas particularly plagued by undead, its is customary to hang dried thistle over the entrances of one's home to ward away the undead. Superstition aside, the plant is a favorite of alchemists, hedge mages, and healers for its alchemical properties, though harvesting it often gives one an unsavory reputation.

Appearance

A corpse thistle is marked jagged green leaves, and short steams baring many sharp thorns or spines. While not long, the thorns can easily pierce skin and leather. The plant produces small vibrant red flowers which give way to bright white seed heads with a red center. The plants seeds are spread by drifting winds.

Basic Information

Ecology and Habitats

Widely distributed, the corpse thistle grows best in deeply shaded areas distant from mortal habitation, typically deep forests. Tradition holds that it grows over a solitary, unburied corpse (mortal or animal) but even the most distasteful attempts to cultivate the species have failed.

Additional Information

Domestication

Considered a weed by most, and despite is beneficial uses, the plant is rarely able to be domesticated. The traditional thought that is grows only on unburied corpses has made most attempts distasteful to all but fringe elements of society, and even then results were middling at best.

Uses, Products & Exploitation

The bright red base of the seed head of the thistle is filled with a thick resin that hardens very quickly when exposed to air. This makes it not only valuable as a thickening agent for a wide variety of alchemical uses, but is even useful in the sealing and treating of wounds.

I shudder at the distasteful practices they have used to attempt to domesticate this plant!
