Curse of Lessening

It is unclear if the lessening is an actual curse, or just a theme so recurrent in Sanzeian mythology as to have created its own explanation, but the concept seems to have been retroactively added to the banishment of The Betrayer as one of the god's 12 curses.  In broad terms, it seems to account for the gradual trend for powerful and large beings to overtime become smaller and less powerful.  While no magical evidence of such a curse has been found one way or another, the apparent logic of the process and its effect on Sanzeia means that, true or not, it has remained in the minds of people across the world.

Manifestation

Tradition holds that that giants were punished for their transgressions in the Fall of the Giants and as a result have descended into numerous smaller forms. Even the most powerful of modern giants are said to be pale reflections of ancestors, and the gradual reduction has led to numerous giant kin and eventually humans. One theory posits that halflings are the result of the same curse being applied to humans.   Much the same appears to have happened to dragons. Having been reduced from massive elemental wyrms to modern dragons then to dragonborn and even some would say kobolds. Some even go as far to say that goblins were once part of a noble, now lost, green skinned race.
