Manticore was the name given to the hybrid creature first recorded in [XXXX], first crafted at random by a particularly large instance of The Scourge and having become a fully-fledged species after successful reproduction between a male and female creature of similar appearance.
Part lion, part bat, part scorpion, manticores are a wholly unnatural breed of beast, and pose an incredible threat towards anyone and anything that may unwittingly stumble across them.
Thankfully these creatures are quite rarely seen, requiring very little food to sustain themselves and crafting isolated homes in lonely desert caverns or chasing off wyverns from their snowy mountain lairs. Even so, they are incredibly territorial animals, chasing off anything that lingers too close and killing whatever is too slow to escape.
Appearance
The majority of a manticore's body bears heavy resemblance to a lion, its skin covered in a thick layer of fur while its front and hind legs take on a distinctly feline shape. While its face has been described as "man-like" by many, likely due to the lack of a snout and the protruding nose, it is wreathed by a flowing, wild mane - interestingly present in both male and female members of the species.
From the chimera's back, however, sprout two gigantic wings atop its shoulder blades which it implements both for flying and for defensive purposes, shielding it from blows and swatting at nearby assailants. Behind these wings, the creature's rear is coated in a thick layered carapace resembling the chitin of an insect but is, in fact, crafted from keratin. These layered plates of armor continue down the beast's segmented tail from the end of which sprouts a wicked stinger capable of delivering a deadly venom.
Male manticores are distinguishable from their female counterparts by the large crooked horns which stick out from beneath their manes, though they rarely seem to be implemented in combat with prey or rivals.
Biology
Despite its impressive size, a manticore seems to require an incredibly small amount of food in order to sustain itself, capable of lasting up to two weeks off of a single meal.
A manticore's venom is one of the most potent toxins known to kithkind, capable of killing a fully-grown ogre mere minutes after a large enough injection.
