Niroi

Reclusive cat people of the distant jungles, the Niroi are famed for their skills in the wild, murderous ways, and arcane traditions. Few Niroi have ever been seen outside their tree homes, and the few that have found their way to civilization were exiled from their native tribes. The Niroi are a warlike people, commonly fighting amongst themselves and occasionally clashing with the elves, who live southwest of their jungle haunts. The deepest parts of the jungle are known only to the Niroi, and in some most expeditions into the jungle would be impossible without one of their native guides.

Civilization and Culture

Common Customs, Traditions and Rituals

When kits reach the age of two, they are taken from their mothers and given to a communal school to learn the secret skills of the forest. After this, they are assigned their chosen positions, duties they will complete for the tribe the remainder of their lives. The more important jobs include: Hunter, night stalker, gatherer, Executioner, Arbiter, or Chief.   More information in 'Niroi Traditions'.   some positions are hereditary, but all can be taken by those who prove themselves worthy, and savage, enough.

History

With unknown origins, the Niroi have existed supposedly forever as gaurdians of their jungle home. A Niroi was brought to the court of King Marothson in 323, and records of them now exist in the royal archives. The elves have held several meeting with Niroi elders, but their purposes were largely unknown.

Common Myths and Legends

The Niroi tell ancient tales of how the forest was created and shepherded in the early days of the world. They speak of the 'Great Tree' hidden somewhere in the furthest depths, how he created the tallest trees, and they created their children, who created the jungle. The great tree married the goddess of rain, bringing eternal health and humidity to the area. Also how their many children, the Niroi, are now the custodians of the eternal forest.   The Niroi myths are told at The Feast of Legends on the first full moon of autumn.

Interspecies Relations and Assumptions

Niroi are viewed as a legend on the Saramoth mainland, except to some members of Marothsa's court, and threaten the elven remnant, which occasionally clashes with them in the deeper parts of the jungle. Few Niroi have ever been seen outside the jungle.
