The traitor
The elvish curse should have destroyed all life in the greenwood. anyone who has studied history knows this. The curse destroys the pure, and corrupts the weak. But Human like king Marothsa were neither destroyed nor corrupted, and emerged from the desert unscathed and triumphant.
Summary
Legend says that King Marothsa led a team of several hundred men and woman into the ancient elven capitol trying to end the war by destroying the elven high command, and their strongest wizards. Some say he was assisted by an elven traitor, a high placed wizard who had secretly defected when he discovered the lengths the Elves were willing to reach to destroy their enemies victory.
King Marothsa won. When the wooden gates of the elven capitol fell, and His soldiers stormed the capitol and fought their way towards the governmental buildings, the elves put their terrible plan into practice. The traitor fled the elves' high command, and met king Marothsa in the city, warning him of the impending disaster. This person supposedly shielded king marothsa and his kin from the desolation, probably killing himself in the process.
After the war, king Marothsa mysteriously emerged from the desert with an accompaniment of several hundred war-weary soldiers, ready to start a new civilization. The so called 'Traitor' was never heard of again, and King Marothsa never mentioned him.
Historical Basis
King Marothsa won the war with a surprise attack on the elven capitol and high command, and later emerged from the desert unharmed, despite constant raids on his caravan from the newly created orc species. The Dwarves had lost their entire armies in the forest, and so saw king Marothsa's survival as a sign that he possessed great power, and deserved their respect.
