The Settled of Quell

Where the night is still respected.

There are tales in Quell of a time when the people feared leaving home at night and traveler's only braved the roads with arrogance at their side. These tales draw back on the oldest and only settlement in Quell, their capital. Quell's capital was formed under duress and fear of an unknown enemy, and their main opposing force became the Night Wardens.   Now-a-days, the Night Wardens are exalted as Quell's leading generals, military commanders and trainers, and source of exports. However, this shift from bastions against the night to governmental enforcers has not done their reputations and history justice. What lurks in the shadows of the forest has become tales to keep children in line, and what harsh initiation trials the Wardens go through turn away more recruits than not.   Though their ranks have thinned, those who clad the grey and green of the Night Wardens are a proud people who know the truths the common folk refuse in times of peace.

History

Quell is a country notorious for it's nomadic tribes, so it is odd to hear that their capital is not one of these tribes. Before the various countries joined themselves under Sarendell, Quell established an order to keep the things what go bump in the night at bay. They had struggled against townsfolk, the here and there adventurer, and occasionally entire tribes disappearing. In an effort to combat this growing terror, they established their capital in the area where the most instances occurred - the outer east edge of Quell.   Here they started identifying ways to keep the terrors away at night and build a self-sufficient society. Over time, their structures expanded outward and their near endless supply of quality clay became the resource they were known for. Baked clay walls, ramparts, and other structures formed until the entire colony gained several layers of territory.   Presently, they are ruled by a small order known as the Night Wardens. Their highest ranking members make the vast majority of decisions on behalf of the town, with the Sheriff representing the law and townsfolk in this council. Meanwhile, the Night Wardens work tirelessly to maintain what has been built over the years and combat any new creatures that arise. Inadvertently, the Night Warden's efforts generated great revenue for the town as they exported many alchemical ingredients to Sarendell from their hunts.

A night stroll is death's toll.
