The Mire

A dangerous force of nature – a total absence of light. Entering the Mire will cause rapid, extremely painful death. Light, as a result, has become a necessary survival tool. Sources of light such as fire, chemical lights, electric lights, or particularly strong bioluminescence can generate enough light to dispel the Mire in a small pocket, making the space safe to be in. The radius of this pocket is determined by the luminosity of the source.   Bodies recovered after being exposed to the Mire appear to suffer from a rapid onset of rigor mortis. Those who somehow manage to survive the Mire after direct exposure are oftentimes go mad, with exposed portions of their body withered and curled as if dried.   The Mire permeates areas that do not receive any kind of light. Spaces that do not see sunlight or any other kind of light such as caves are Mired until they are lit. When the light goes away, the Mire moves back into place.   With the destruction of the Shard of the Father by the First Radiants, the nightly appearance of the Mire ceased and the night was made safe again for humanity. The Mire no longer appears in areas of any darkness, even deep underground. It is believed that the Mire has been defeated by the First Radiants, never to return again.

Manifestation

The Mire appears early during twilight periods as misty tendrils of darkness. As night falls, the tendrils thicken and gather into a single featureless mass of darkness.
