The Seven Seas

The old sayings about the Seven Seas abound. But there aren't seven seas - every culture sees the sea differently. Ancient Greeks had one set of seven seas, but modern mariners see only the Mediterranean. Bluntly speaking, a sea is just a body of water mostly encircled by land, and so all seas are part of a larger ocean, in thought at least. And those aren't clearly delineated either. The Oceans interconnect but change attributes at certain points. The two largest oceans, Atlantic and Pacific, are usually subdivided multiple times based on currents and weather patterns, but these divisions are actually both parts of the same whole - like a land-based region. There are so many seas, but about only about five oceans, even if those have many regions it still only counts as one ocean.
