S4. Out of the Fire, Back Into the Frying Pan!

General Summary

Marpenoth 13
In this episode, our brave heroes…
Enflamed with passion (and Nesbit actually on fire), they bust into a jail cell just off the crypt and dispatch three red-cloaked ruffians, battling through fire and purple mist alike. Bright Song is ambushed by one and narrowly avoids death (again)! The cell contains:
a rock gnome named Ethyl who, armed with just a spatula, helps the party defeat his jailors and agrees to accompany them on their search for treasure and missing gnomes
a mother and her two children, a young boy and girl, also intended for the slavers’ yoke. The mother thanks the group and reveals the location of an heirloom emerald necklace under the floorboards of an old alchemy shop outside the town of Thundertree, near the Neverwinter Wood.
After leading the family outside, our heroes return to the bandits’ lair, where a set of secret doors open into a small cavern, split by a crevasse with magic in the air and death near the bottom. Of the half-eaten human remains at the bottom of the pit, none appear to be the party’s missing gnome acquaintance.
At one end of the cavern, a poorly-hidden secret door reveals a small storeroom and armory where Ethyl recovers his stolen possessions.
As the group follows an exit, Ninris and Ethyl encounter a mysterious eye that speaks to the cleric in cryptic Undercommon from the shadows above the stone chasm. The creature seems satisfied when Ninris promises to return to barter with secrets.
Down a set of stairs, a magical laboratory of some sort bubbles with activity. The curious adventurers pilfer some magical reagents, romance novels, and a tome written in Dwarvish that makes reference to a lost mine, a forge of souls, and a magical mace lost in the depths of a vanished cave.
Past the lab, a small candlelit room appears to have been evacuated quite recently. Torgan finds that it contains: a half-open treasure chest, whichthe party empties of valuables; several pages of supply requisitions signed with a mysterious black spider symbol; and yet another secret door, left slightly ajar.
Before the group can investigate the hidden exit, another door guarded by Jareth springs open to reveal several red cloaks and other masked men — none too happy to see our intrepid heroes!
Will our brave band of bandit-besieged barnstormers survive another brutal brawl? Tune in next week to find out!
