Regent

Regent is an office that almost every Scarterran government uses in some fashion. If a hereditary position falls to a person who has not reached the age of adulthood (whatever their age their culture and race considers adulthood), typically a regent is charged with helping the minor attend his or her duties while simultaneously training and teaching the youth.
A regent can also fill in for an adult ruler if the ruler is temporarily incapacitated or is on a religious pilgrimage or other action that makes it inappropriate or infeasible for the official ruler to carry out his or her duties.
The appointment of a person being a regent is a sign of great trust. It means a ruler trusts his retainer greatly valuing both the regent's skill and the regent's loyalty. Even if an assigned regent never actually needs to act as regent, being given that much trust is a huge source of prestige and status.
