Physical Description
General Physical Condition
Wiry, slight, but surprisingly strong. He is fit.
Facial Features
He has a scar on his forehead from a sword wound. His nose has been broken (twice), so it's slightly misshapen. His arms have several scars on them from his military campaigns.
Mental characteristics
Personal history
Rufus became duke when his father abdicated the position in 870 AFE, after realizing that dementia was stealing his mental faculties.
He married Julianne, his second wife, in 865 AFE, and has a two sons (ages 14 and 9) and a daughter (age 12). He has no children from his first wife, Margryt, who died of a hydra bite after only three years of marriage.
His elder son, Faradren, is his father's page, and is learning statecraft at his knee. He is also training with weaponsmasters, and shows great promise. He is being groomed to eventually take his father's place as Duke.
His daughter, Kellianne, is a bright, pretty girl who seems to care more for her garden than anything else. She has been learning about the plants and how to take care of them from the gardener. Nevertheless, the Duke hasn't neglected her political training. She will need that when she becomes an adult.
His younger son, Gerard, has just begun training in the martial arts. He says he wants to join the Imperial Army and become a Cronus, or at least a Hyperion.
Rufus himself holds the rank of sur-Thea, and although he did see some action (mostly against pirates and the odd band of brigands), his time in the military was during peacetime. A competent officer, he doesn't really stand out. He is very careful with the logistics, however, knowing that without that, no army will be effective. He is an expert fencer, and knows how to fight with various weapons.
He has needed to use his military prowess occasionally against feisty barons and counts, though. There is always some low-level fighting going on between the barons and counts in the duchy, and he has had to have his forces step in on occasion.
Mental Trauma
The death of Margryt, his first wife, to the attack of a hydra has made him not really appreciate hydras all that much. His first instinct is to kill them when he comes across them.
Intellectual Characteristics
He is bright, but not a genius. But he's tenacious, stubborn, and hates having to give up on a problem. He is careful and methodical, and tries very hard to figure out the consequences of any decision as best he can. He will often use stalling tactics in order to buy more time to make the right decision. He is a loving husband and father, and will get very protective of his family if needs be.
Personality Characteristics
Motivation
His underlying motivation is family. And, to a certain extent, the entire duchy is a sort of extended family to him. So he strives to run the duchy as well as he can, given the limitations of politics.
Likes & Dislikes
He likes cats, and tolerates dogs. While he's friendly to dogs, he is just more of a cat person.
He gets along well with the Grand Duchess due to her sense of humor, keen eyes, and sharp mind. He enjoys the politics of the Court.
He likes to wear blue and silver, the colors of his house coat of arms. The City Guard use a variant of the colors scheme in their uniforms.
