The Monk of the Way of the Dragon aren't a religious order, they are a school of combat, and a very expensive one.

Learning to fight barehanded and with all type of weapons is the target of their training. When a yuong is accepted in the school it's only the beginning, nearly half of the recruits does not complete the first year (with a high level of casualty).

When a student is named "Ascendant" it's ready to leave the school to practice and rise his skill.

Those who survive and feel ready return to the school and take the rank of "Applicant", to take their shot at becoming a teacher.

Every 5 years a great tournament is held, all the Applicant can fight their way to became the new "Masters", but only few Applicants are promoted, just enough to complete the rank of master that have been made available in the previous 5 years.
