Straatvegers

Now this brings back memories of home!
— Braam de Klerk, watching sparks fly over the control consols aboard ship

These are nomadic people, wandering between the Cores in patchwork ships in need of repair. The most common reference is that the straatvegers' ships were not actual death traps, but they would do until the actual death traps showed up.

Straatvegers are renowned at collecting scrap and other salvage items in areas that might either be too dangerous, or seem to have nothing to salvage at all.

This scrap is then used for trade when they arrive at stations, world-stations, or planets within Cores.

A Melting Pot

Straatvegers, like so many of the cultures across the Cores, are a melting pot of Old Earth ethnicities. In particular, the Straatvegers have a strong South African, Romani, and Dutch roots to their culture. This is easily noticed through their mix of South African, Romani and Dutch slang that is laced through any conversation.

Nomadic Tinkers

The Straatvegers collect and salvage scrap but also became masters of innovation out of necessity. Ship repairs are costly, often outside the price that a Straatveger can afford. So every salvage effort involves looking for parts they need for their own ships and tech.

Salvaged tech is cleaned, repaired and refurbished before being sold. Parts too worn for repair are sold as scrap. However, Straatvegers are constantly tinkering and improving on what they find. This leads them to make innovations that sometimes surpass what the Cores invent.

In many ways, the Straatvegers are the direct inheritors of the old Earth "maker movement".
Author's note: the Straatvegers were created by Lamar Henderson during the "Out to the Black" Storium
