The Grey Years started during the eruption of the Black Peak, a long slumbering volcano that covered the land in ash for an extended period.

This event had various consequences, such as causing the area to become practically uninhabitable for a time and destroying a large number of records.   Lastly, the monster population in the country rose significantly, before monsterhunters from other lands stepped in to assist in lowering these numbers.
