Elephant Trains

For centuries, elephant trains have functioned as the arteries for the heart of the Shenadese Empire. While the technology has developed over the years, elephant trains are all based on a simple concept; large carriages pulled by two or more elephants. Capable of carrying large amounts of people, and or large quantities of goods over hundreds of miles, these vehicles connect all the major cities in Shenadah. While not as fast as a single rider on horseback, elephant trains can travel for much longer, and weather the variety of climates throughout the massive nation.
Aside from their carrying capacity and endurance, elephant trains also offer the added deterrence of the threat from the large beasts themselves. It is quite common practice that when an elephant train is threatened the rider will detach one the beasts to chase down would-be robbers. While coordinated attackers are capable of frightening the creatures into temporary panic, this is still a fairly rare occurrence.
Due to the utility and ubiquity of this mode of transport, the Shenadese government has subsidized many of the main elephant train routes. This has made traveling between cities affordable to all citizens. While the rise in airships has provided a faster method of travel, the affordability and reliability of elephant trains have kept them in high demand even today.
