Hasim

Overview

Hasim was one of two highly advanced, but highly dependent, worlds in the Terastont System during the Mandate era. With a large industrial base, but no real agricultural production, Hasim is an example of the catastrophic crash that happened during the Silence.

History

Hasim, like @Andophael, was a pretech manufacturing center in the Mandate era. One of the key differences with Andophael, however, was the slight difference in climate that made Hasim less profitable for exotic hydroponic farm-factories. Instead, there were a large number of chemical and military-focused enterprises. When the Jump Gate network collapsed during the Scream, the government officials in the system consolidated ships, technology, and supplies, leaving behind masses of citizens on Andophael. This betrayal was justified by claiming to save as many people as possible. However, even extreme measures were insufficient to preserve any measure of high technology, and both worlds were reduced to low-industrial-age technologies.   Hasim's leadership took an approach to the crisis that amounted to waiting out whatever caused the emergency by relying on the stockpiles of goods and technology. Even when it was far too late, the world was focused on holding on until the Mandate sent relief. Not until far too late did anyone begin efforts at cultivating food locally, and the burned bridged with Andophael meant that no help was forthcoming from the farmers there. Though both worlds would have benefitted from additional biodiversity, it was really Hasim which bore the brunt of this decision. In combination with the lack of a native biosphere, this caused massive die-off and regression to feudal governance. In the current age, routes to Terastont were recently re-mapped, and outside entities are helping Hasim bootstrap up to a decent level of technological development.

Biosphere

The complete lack of native life on Hasim left the population with only a few varieties of high-nutrient meal replacement crops which were being tested for cold-weather growth in the high latitudes. There are a few types of yeasts and molds which were accidentally introduced aboard spaceships, but they can only be found where human habitation already provides a conducive environment to grow and assorted waste products for them to consume.

Culture

The apocalyptic population crash on Hasim left alive only a handful of extreme survivors in a number of enclaves around the planet. Some of these were the result of communities banding together in a concerted survival effort, and others are the descendants of rich bureaucrats or officers who had the foresight to gather as many resources and personnel as possible into underground bunkers. Aside from hydroponic farming, the primary occupation of these enclaves is questing for hidden caches of Pretech among the ruins of the world. On occasion these finds may be useful for a group's survival, but more often they are unable to use the tech directly or it is completely useless. Visiting merchants might take a gamble on paying to hunt through an enclave's trash heap to find valuable Pretech scrap or materials.
