Nigawa
The west most of the large rivers that run south from the Redwind Mountains and feed into Lake Kohu. It forms the border between the Northern Province and the Western Province. Notable settlements along it's shores include West Gale and Yokoni.
The name comes from the Shudani words ni (meaning two or second) and gawa (meaning river).
Although boat travel from north to south is obviously easier, the river is ride enough in most places to tack side to side and still progress from south to north for most of the year. Rowing, or towing boats from the shore is also possible.
The surface of the northern most part of the river freezes in places, on and off throughout the Moon of Nights, Spirit Moon, and Chill Moon. Travel to and from places like Hirotani are not possible for most of this time.
During the Moon of Sewing, Moon of Storms, and Moon of Life, the melting snow and ice, in addition to the increased amount of rain fall, leads to a stronger than usual current, especially in the north. Travel from Hirotani is possible during this time, but traveling north to Hirotani is difficult and sometimes impossible.
