Irum (EE'rum)
Irum is a iron-like ore that is most often found in the caves of the mountains along the western border of the Seleim continent. Most concentrations of the metal are on the Yzelian side, just across the border, and were ceded in exchange for other useful metals located on what became the Eoin side after the Fourth Peace.
The ore has the ability to absorb the six essences. Generally, this is done indiscriminately and randomly with whatever essence(s) happen to be around the stone. Depending on the properties of the ore, it can store varying amounts and then slowly release them. Larger samples can store larger quantities of essences. However, denser samples will release these essences much more slowly. Size is only loosely tied to density. A piece of ore can be attuned to a specific essence by overloading it. Once this is done, the stone will almost exclusively absorb the overloaded essence. It will continue to absorb the five others, but these are in such low amounts as to be negligible when determining usefulness. Esh are able to pull the essence from the stone to use later. Extraction is more difficult with dense samples.
Originally, the ore was used as an enhancement to jewelry pieces and found in very low amounts. These were infused with specific essences in order to create various colors within the stones. When larger deposits were found in what was then the mountains of Ulena, the ore began being used in the prison system as restraints.
Prisoners who are capable of essence magic are kept in cells that deprive them of whatever their most proficient essence is. For example, a Lu-esh, or light essence magic user, will be kept in total darkness. The irum in their restraints will absorb any leftover light essence in the room. Each prisoner is evaluated prior to confinement to determine the density of cuff needed to ensure they cannot extract the essence absorbed.
