Session 17: Facing the Past

When encountering the Dire Rite Birds, Theo used enlargement first on Thorns and then on the tree itself to shrink it down to a more manageable 180 ft. Startling the bladed birds, you went up against them until Theo paralyzed one and Thorns ripped off one of its feet. Moving quickly, Fen plucked some of its feathers and then stepped away with Daisy, Joan, and Theo. Thorns remained behind to endure another hit or two before healing the maimed bird and returning with the party. You gave the feathers to Froom so they allowed you to pass, leaving behind two buff potions that would eliminate any lasting effects. On your journey, you encountered three interns all bearing the black cloaks with red clouds of the Cutthroats. After interrupting their failed ambush against you, they told you that Redd the Viper was at the town Ballater up ahead. They gave you their cloaks and ran off as you continued the trek. Upon entering the city, you found it deserted in the square but the stadium was in full swing. Spying the best seats in the house, you made your way up, deceiving the guards out front to get an audience with Red. A fight quickly broke out that resulted in Theo killing two guards with a well-placed ice knife and Fen cut down several guards herself with her flaming sword. Thorns dealt the final blow to Redd after they cut their final insults to one another and the life and color faded from him. Numb, Thorns was guided out of the stadium by Daisy and Fen and Theo suggested that the party should go and rest at the local tavern, The Fancy Child. You then found a friendly bugbear named Bretty and his son, Illinois Sandwich (Boyd), a child celebrity, who sang for you. Theo got caught by surprise by the forward shifty Syndowlyn, whom Joan and Fen did not get a good feeling from. You finished the busy day with a night in which Fen encountered some jealous reading material, Theo got some support from his mother, and Thorns began forging an alliance with Loth.
