Festival of the Auroras

The Festival of the Auroras is a festival in Nikkon culture held on nights of a new moon in which people gather together in unity and celebration under the beauty of the aurora australis at their clearest. Booths are set up, special aurora cakes are sold, and dances are held.

History

Reverence for the Southern Lights goes back to ancient times. Artists' attempts to capture their beauty date back to green and pink pigment slathers on caves. People saw them as a blessing from the gods in thanks for making it through another month, and as a measure of time.
Ross Smith and Kalon Palanin are invited to one festival during their quest, helping mend recent divisions between a group of rogue Afayan Cavalry marauders and the Nikki.

Execution

A favorite tradition of the festival is the making of a special aurora cake for couples and families. New couples especially pleased with their aurora cake under the Southern Lights are destined to enjoy a long prosperous life together. Another is that the denizens perform ritualistic dances.

Components and tools

Clothing is often made decorated in the pattern of the aurora. Special aurora cakes are made with a mixture of bread, milk, eggs, flour, and berries as a culmination of success and tribute to nature's blessings.

Participants

Anyone and everyone with the sole exception of violent criminals, is allowed to attend, for all life shares the one sky.

Observance

The festival occurs on nights of a new moon--when the Southern Lights are at their brightest.
