Karniz (Car-Nits)

Demographics

Tieflings and Dwarves are the primary inhabitants of Karniz since they are often seen as the most reliable miners. Tieflings also serve a secondary purpose as businessmen.

Government

Karniz is run primarily by an elected chiefdom. The chief makes many of the executive decisions for the village, but often appoints an assistant to help them run what little there is.

Defences

There are no formal defenses, walls, or even a consistent patrol, which leaves the village constantly vulnerable to attacks from bandits, armies, or even wild monsters. A portion of the budget is often set aside to hire mercenaries to guard the town, or bribe incoming groups to "fuck off." This legacy is well known in the area, and telling someone to "fuck off" is also called the Karnisian Bribe.

Industry & Trade

Most of their money comes from the precious gems and metals that are extracted from the surface levels of Mount Jacklemore. Though they lie within the realms of the Bandhorian Kingdom, they pay taxes in a special way by providing jewels that the royal family will use in their clothing. They are still allowed to use gems leftover as personal treasure or sell them to other, slightly larger smithies around them.

Infrastructure

This small village is put together more like a mining camp, rather than an actual town, but there is still a functioning government and residences. Many of them are primarily stone and/or mud-brick, to compensate for the generally hot/arid climate of the area

History

Karniz was initially established as a small-scale mining operation and was not meant to last more than a year so that they could extract the precious jewels from the ground; but as they dug deeper, they ran into larger veins of ores and metals, and their charter was extended.    Karniz suffered a lot initially because of its untrained and lackluster civilian defense. They were often the target of organized raids and skirmishes in its 15-year history, and the final straw came when a group of duergar set up camp deep within the mountain and paid hommage to a devil known as Friexwerver, and so a new chapter of the Storm-Jumper cult was established.   These attacks, known as "storms" by those who have suffered under their thumb, became more frequent, and more deadly as the invading forces, and the final attack was just about the last time they could bear themselves to rebuild something futile. A group known as the Sunday Funday Quartet came into town after this attack, and swore to vanquish this foe from the face of the earth.   It was not enough, since new enemies were made aware of the town, and the chief at the time, called the town to a vote, on whether to leave, or to stay, and try desperately to rebuild. A beaten, broken populace, voted to abandon the site and incur any punishments that may follow.   Since then, former Karnisians have been cast to the winds of fate, and let the skein of time and fortune lead their lives, since the fall of their previously desolate town.
