Most familiars are picked up from the slave trade, or kidnapped from other realms. Their memories are locked, therefore creating a "blank slate". Oftentimes, certain emotions (anger, contempt) are also locked in an attempt to create a completely compliant familiar. They are regulated by Algacrypt, who has made Familiars into his fairly lucrative business.
Most names are given at random, or share hooker logic in that the most exotic and/or fuckable names win.
