The World-Coming-To-Be Tale

Summary

In the beginning, the Great Sages created the laws of the universe, allowing the universe as we know it to form out of chaos. However, staying in the universe they had lovingly created would cause it to fall apart again due to their power. And so they created guardian gods to maintain the worlds they created.   The ones that watch over our world were named Mere and Engrat, and the duties of the world were divided between them. Each of them created other child-gods to assist in their duties. And for a while, all was peaceful in the world.   But Engrat grew ambitious and cold. They did not want to share their duties and power with anyone else. They wished to become as powerful as the Great Sages of old, and mold and toy with the universe as they saw fit. To do that, they first needed to get rid of Mere.   Engrat called some of the gods they had created and told them of their plan. “Follow me and you will not be killed,” they said. "You will be given more power then you could ever dream of." They did not mean it, but it was enough to sway some of the gods.   But one god, a nameless minor god at the time, was not truly swayed. They had seen Mere at work and knew there was no reason for them to die.   So they warned the others, who rushed to Mere’s aid. But the gods were scattered across the world. By the time they arrived, it was too late. Engrat had disposed of Mere and was preparing to absorb their power.   The nameless god was heartbroken, and summoned a burst of light to distract and blind Engrat. This allow Mere’s power to disperse throughout the world. The other gods, furious and grief-stricken, laid into Engrat, renamed Taklin, and the traitor-gods, who would henceforth be known as the Kayie.   The war raged on for countless years, longer than any Scyll can fathom. Scyll themselves were mostly allowed refuge on one of Archa's islands. Some joined the fight, pledging to either side in hopes of a reward, or hoping to end the war.   Meanwhile, on Nimbus, mountain ranges were pushed up. Craters were formed from gods falling. The seas boiled away, leaving much of the world desert.   Finally, the gods prevailed, sending Taklin and their demon horde to Omewigo, the Dark Underground. Their screams still echoed through to the surface, causing terrible storms and earthquakes, and causing Scyll to have to move to the tops of mountains.   Afterwards, the gods distracted themselves from their heartbreak by attempting to repair the world as best they could, creating swamps, meadows and other bits of habitable land for Scyll on the mountains. To protect Scyll from the demons, a vast storm was created, buffeting the land with wings and keeping the demons away from the mountains. The gods mourned the death of their beloved Mere, especially the formerly nameless god Fuldame, who showed her sorrow by creating rainbows sometimes.   However, there was a spark of hope. As they traveled the world repairing it, they noticed that some areas were easier to save then others. Mere’s power had, indeed, seeped into parts of the planet itself.   And occasionally, a Scyll would be born with a measure of Mere’s power, making powerful Ethites and formidable foes.   And there are some born with more than a measure, known as an Arcen or a "Spectral Hero", who embody almost to the fullest one of the Six Virtues. They have great power and great destines. However, they should always beware for Engrat or one of his minions to come, seeking Mere’s power. And the more of them there are, the easier they are to find...
