The End of the Warring Empires Era and the beginning of the Confederation Era started with a bang; literally.
The Calamity
It was one of the many battles between the Empires (in this case the Libri, Avi, and Swapi), fighting over a small planet rich in metals. During the battle the star known as Kesucal exploded in a gigantic supernova, so bright astronomers estimate it could be seen as many as 20,000 light years away1.
The fleets, their members, and the planet they were fighting over were all annihilated. Out of five million souls, only ten escaped the initial destruction. However, system debris, shockwaves, and radiation killed many more. Faced with such a heavy catastrophe, the grand empires crumbled under the stress. It is estimated that between a hundred million and four billion lives were lost within the year.
Beings lost confidence in organized government, especially after the revelation of the Swapni Letters, and anarchy reigned for many years. What governments there were only encompassed a single planet, if that. Interstellar space became lawless, with pirates, bounty hunters, and gang leaders running amok.
(1) This was confirmed in 708 AKC when the Humans joined the Confederation, having reports of a bright light they called "Kepler's Supernova".
