Stealer of Cheese

Tucked into a niche in a quiet square on the outskirts of Hollow City is a small, poignant memorial to a former citizen of the city. Carved of black granite is a monument of a cat with bat wings, seated on a rectangular pedestal.   He sits in a loaf pose with his head slightly bowed, his wings partly spread to either side, his paws tucked beneath him, and his tail curled against his side. In the pedestal is carved:
Stealer of Cheese. The house is too quiet without your voice. Fifteen years was not long enough.
He is flanked by a pair of white marble benches with wear patterns that show they were put to much use. The wall behind him is overgrown with ivy and morning glories. A few broken columns show where the small yard once had an overhanging gallery, but now the sun is free to shine into the little square.   Ever since it was found by hollows exploring the ruins of the city, it has become a place to come and sit quietly in the peaceful shade of the nearby birch tree. A small collection of flowers and trinkets has slowly begun to grow at Stealer of Cheese's feet, and at some point a more artistic hollow has bestowed a flower crown to drape around his ear. There is usually a candle or two burning on the corner of the pedestal.   It has become something of a good luck talisman to rub his ears or boop his nose.   It is thought that the small square was likely the courtyard for a modest residence, most of which is now in ruins save for a single staircase and a stone outer wall with tall, arched windows.   No doubt Stealer of Cheese was once a beloved guardian of the household, and was greatly missed following his passing.
