The Beast of Byrock

For the last six weeks the city of Byrock has been terrorized by a series of brutal murders, leaving seven shaken victims traumatized, two of them re-victimized, one soulless, and an eighth permanently dead. Two attacks in which the victims were able to escape are suspected to be related, but cannot be confirmed. In all cases, victims were unable to get a clear look at their attacker.   It is Byrock's first known serial murderer (not assassin) in over two hundred years, and most jarring of all, this individual has been able to carry out these murders seemingly without leaving any trail or witnesses. All evidence seems to be inconsistent or non-existent.   Unlike assassinations, the victims of these attacks are deliberately inflicted with multiple severe wounds before death, and were left with significant facial scarring that required specialized healing to repair.   Five of the confirmed attacks took place in the Harborward, while four took place in the Timber Bowl, and the eighth, permanently deceased, was found in Copperhill. Citizens are being advised to avoid the Harborward and Timber Bowl late at night, when activity is more sparse and the narrow side lanes emptied, unless they have necessary work to perform.   Thus far, all but two victims have been fortunate enough to have either a soul stone on their person, or were close enough to a soul stone cluster in the Harborward to have their souls preserved, but there is an increasing panic among Byrock's citizens that the next victim may not be so fortunate, especially after the permanent death in Copperhill.   The Beast of Byrock is presumed to be a male humanoid of average to larger height with only two arms, based on analysis of the injuries inflicted. However, a female perpetrator cannot be eliminated.   Witness testimony from the victims present contradictory statements regarding a description of the perpetrator, leading some to theorize there may, in fact, be more than one individual involved, or that one or more of the attacks were a copycat. Further speculation is that the attacks are being carried out by a necromancer via different puppets, thus explaining the inconsistencies between the victims' reports.
