Zilargo
What happens to a Dragonborn horde when their mighty ruler dies in battle or to time? Some find a new horde to join but do so in disgrace or shame, treated by their new horde as below even the lowly kobolds. Some embrace the new freedom and go gallivanting off to take up a more nomadic lifestyle with some light banditry on the side. But some, faced with this choice, sought to build something greater.
It is over a thousand years ago that one of the Great Dragons, Coeus, met their death in the jaws of Kronus. To their surprise, when Kronus’ horde descended into the Black Pit where Coeus and their horde slumbered and served, they found that they had long fled under their masters’ instructions. South they travelled to the land now called Zilargo.
There they founded the only nation of Dragonborn that lives outside of mountains and not under direct rule of a dragon. Since then, other dragonborn hordes who have lost their master have made their way to Zilargo, each time bringing with them a new trove of ancient artifacts and lost knowledge. In fact, most consider the Korranberg Library to be the greatest repository of knowledge in all of Khorvaire. Zilargo has long kept out of human affairs and has even managed to establish itself as a respected and neutral partner to all. Their word is held in high regard throughout Khorvaire and Zilargo dignitaries played no small part in the signing of the Thronehold Concord .
Zolanberg's continued existence and prosperity is of no small wonder and import. Dragonborn usually spawn from the blessing of a dragon master, given to those who have proven themselves most loyal or skilled. When a dragonborn mates with another of their kin, the result is a Kobold. The Dragonborn of Zilargo have no master to bless them with offspring but somehow their numbers have not dwindled. How they manage this has long been a closely guarded secret of the Zilargons.
Many outsiders come to visit the great sites and brilliant entertainment that Zilargo has to offer but few have chosen to make their homes here. The Dragonborn uphold what many others see as a stifling rule of law. Zilargo is, however, home to a growing population of gnomes who once called the Shimmerwood Forest their home but who became increasingly drawn to the growing Dragonborn cities.
