Osberger Super-Stinger Riot Grenade
Written by: Ripshot
So back before things like stick-'n-shock rounds and flash-paks, SWAT teams had to make do with more low-tech solutions to clearing out spaces without killing everyone inside, and one of those solutions was a so-called 'stinger-grenade'. It basically works the same as a classic fragmentation-grenade, but instead of spraying deadly metal fragments around, it was filled to the brim with little rubber pellets that were scattered about at high-speeds by a smaller blast. It hurt like hell and sometimes took an eye or two out, but it's a little more merciful than getting a belly full of shrapnel, as far as the feds were concerned. Osberger LES, with their characteristic love of simplicity and cheap alternatives to fancy gimmicks, decided to bring this back in a new form to meet the needs of contemporary pigs looking to put some hurt downrange without hurting their PR with excessive unnecesarry fatalities, and the sadists in the design-bureau came up with the 'Super Stinger', and let me tell you: Hearing about Dragoon's "enthusiastic" purchase-order of these bad boys after a live demonstration made me reach for a hard drink. In short, it's a stinger-grenade made with hurting trolls, orks and chromed-out razorboys in mind. Instead of a hundred little pellets pellets, you've got a smaller number of larger shaped steel slugs given a generous coating of rubber, and the propelling explosive-charge has been kicked up a dozen notches to launch these suckers far and wide. They're a lot more chunky and heavy than standard grenades and need a coffee-mug style handle to throw it properly, but you don't need to throw' em far anyhow. For once, I feel homegirl's pain. A couple of these things were thrown either side of a strike-turned-angry-mob in the warehouse district, and basically ended the incident right then and where. Apparently when those rubber things hit cyberlimbs, they make it vibrate real drekkin' painfully...
The less-than-lethal projectiles these devices fire out are actually rubber-coated slugs from a standard-gauge shotgun shell. On the surface it's a pretty novel cost-cutting technique, but close inspection of the grenade's casing reveals that the frangible outer-sleeve can be twisted off at the top with the right tools. From there, it's a simple task to pull out the rubber-coated slugs and replace them with something else, to turn a riot-deterrant into a makeshift but hellishly efficient IED. Expect this knowledge to find its way back to the design bureau and the grenade's purchasers.
Another fun fact: Osberger's toying with the idea of making these into 'stationary deterrents', set to drop out a hole in the ceiling and make a shadowrunner think long and hard about religion.
