The Integrated Automated Fingerprint Identification System (IAFIS) provides state-of-the-art fingerprint identification and criminal history data services, and dramatically improves the support services that the FBI provides to federal, state, and local law-enforcement and criminal-justice agencies. A Routine Investigation or Routine Research check locates any U.S. citizen who has a previous criminal record or law-enforcement background. The check is made at Standard Difficulty is applied if searching for a United States citizen who has no criminal record (the fingerprints may have been taken for some other reason and included in the database), or any individual from a country with diplomatic relations with the United States if such a person has a criminal record. A foreign national with no criminal record may be identified by making the check at Near Impossible Difficulty.
